#1 New York Times bestselling author Tessa Bailey returns with the hilarious follow-up to Secretly Yours, in which a down-on-her-luck Napa heiress suggests a mutually beneficial marriage of convenience to a man she can't stand... only to discover there's a fine line between love and hate.

After losing her job and her fiancé in one fell swoop, Natalie Vos returned home to lick her wounds. A few months later, she's sufficiently drowned her sorrows in cabernet and she's ready to get back on her feet. She just needs her trust fund to finance her new business venture. Unfortunately, the terms require she marry before she can have the money. And well, dumped, remember? But Natalie is desperate enough to propose to a man who makes her want to kill him--and kiss him, in equal measure.

August Cates may own a vineyard, but he doesn't know jack about making wine. He's determined to do his late best friend proud, no matter what it takes. Except his tasting room is empty, his wine is disgusting (seriously, he once saw someone gag), and his buddy's legacy is circling the drain. No bank will give him the loan he needs to turn the business around... and then the gorgeous, feisty heiress knocks on his door. Natalie has haunted his dreams since the moment they met, but their sizzling chemistry immediately morphed into simmering insults.

Now, a quickie marriage could help them both. A sham wedding, a few weeks living under the same roof, and then they can go their separate ways--assuming they make it out alive. How hard could it be? There's just one thing they didn't account for: their unfortunate, unbearable, undeniable attraction.

the devil works hard but tessa bailey works harder 🥱

I'm so conflicted how to rate this, technically it is okay. It has one my absolute favourite trope arranged marriage and at times it works. However, between the drama and the pace of things, especially in third act just felt exhausting although I really liked the epilogue.

    - the version that I read was an arc -

did I read this in a single sitting? yes. will I read it in a single sitting again the moment it's released? also yes.

  • Samantha

Man alive, I'm sad that these books didn't hit it out of the park for me!

I enjoyed Unfortunately Yours, there's something about two people who love to mess with each other that I find greatly endearing. I just couldn't make myself care about wine country or wall street or any of that. I will say, this book was far spicier than the first book, like whoa.

Overall, it was a cute but fairly forgettable contemporary romance for me. If you're a fan of Bailey's definitely read it, but I think I will forever be chasing the high of Hook, Line, and Sinker.

Thank you to the author and publisher for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

This book gave off strong Republican energy, and his dirty talk made me feel violated.

Thank you Tessa Bailey and NetGalley for sharing this advanced copy with me for an honest opinion/review.

I liked the first book in this duology, Secretly Yours, but I really loved this one! It was so much more fun and chemistry between Natalie and August was absolutely insane!

In Secretly Yours we meet Julian's sister, Natalie, who had essentially ran away from Napa to become a trader at a top firm in NY. But after a trade went south and she lost a lot of money for her clients and firm, her fiancé broke up with her and she moved back home to lick her wounds, and figure out her next move. Then she meets August, a new vintner in Napa with the worst tasting wine. After judging August's awful wine in a competition in Unfortunately Yours, we immediately see the chemistry between the two in their banter and witty one liners at each other. When Natalie finds out she needs to get married to access her trust fund, August seems to be the perfect participant for a marriage of convenience. This idea was perfectly planned out, except their feelings kept coming up, but in the absolute best way!

I love that August brought back and brought out Natalie's playful side! August was such a charmer and just a genuinely good/nice guy, but still had enough gruffness to not completely be put in the friend zone. His playfulness mixed with his protective and attentive side was exactly the right fit for Natalie, The spice in this book is pretty great, too. It's not smutty, but not tame either, and I absolutely love that Bailey draws the spicy scenes out for several pages, not to mention the sexually tense build up that is basically foreplay prior to the sexy times. :)

I had such a fun reading experience with this book with multiple laugh out loud moments. I highly recommend this one, even if you don't read the first one.

August freaking Cates takes the duet! I thought nothing could top Julian and Hallie but the way August and Natalie interacted warmed my heart so much! Their sarcastic conversations are the epitome of love

WHEW. Tessa Bailey does it again. I absolutely loved this book! Natalie and August's relationship had me hooked from the very beginning. Their snarky banter, their sexual tension, and the way that they continuously kept learning and growing (both personally and together) was an absolute delight. Tessa has a way of writing such fun stories while also giving her characters such depth and August and Natalie are no exception. I highly recommend!

Okay- if you read my Secretly Yours review, you’ll know that I did not have a lot of hope for this book.

I am so happy to say that I was proven wrong! I actually enjoyed this book so much. I was debating between a 3.5 or a 4 star rating, but went with 4 given I finished it in 24 hours.

There was definitely still some cringe factor, but I was able to overlook it this time. I actually giggled out loud at the banter between August and Natalie, and I LOVED their relationship building through the book. I feel like I would recommend this, especially since you could technically read it as a stand-alone from the first book. Plus, this book is hot. Really hot. Had to put that out there.

Unfortunately Yours comes out in June and I am so grateful to have gotten to read it a bit early! This felt a lot more like what I picture when I think of Tessa Bailey’s writing (if that makes sense). I can definitely see myself rereading this book:)

This is hands down one of Tessa’s best books, possibly even my favorite. There is so much wit and humor but also some much heart and tenderness. Both Natalie and August are powerhouse characters with so much personality that compliment each other so well. The banter throughout this book was non stop, while also delivering on more serious notes such as grief/loss and feelings of alienation. I laughed so so much, cried a few times, and the spice was top tier as we’ve come to expect from TB books. Thank you to Tessa & Books Are Magic for the surprise arc. I am so so grateful.

Oh I adored this. I knew I was going to from the tropes alone: marriage of convenience, enemies to lovers but this was exceptional.

I love both Natalie and August, which always helps, but I was just rooting for them. I resonated a lot with Natalie I think and August is just my type, navy seal hello.

The romance was so swoon worthy I think even my knees went weak at times and it was SPICY 🔥 Tessa always writes the best love scenes.

I am just obsessed with them, and honestly I think I will reread this love story many a time.

    LOVED IT.

I love Ms. Bailey, don't get me wrong. It just took me a few hundred pages to warm up to this story. It wasn't the characters and it wasn't the chemistry - it was all there. Maybe it was the early ARC I downloaded? I have no idea but the beginning felt a bit wobbly. But I persevered and made it to the absolute brilliant ending. SOOOO worth it :)

I was skeptical because I did it like the first one in this series however for once the sequel is better than the first. The pairing of Natalie and August made a much better pairing and a more dynamic story. Both characters started out a bit broke and grew together by listening and working through issues. It’s not prefect but it earned 4 stars in my book.

  • AR

This could’ve been 4 stars if it wasn’t for August being such a (expletive laden sentence). But definitely worlds better than the first one still.

When in the acknowledgments I read “enemies-to-lovers book” & that these were some of her favorite characters she’s ever written…I couldn’t wait to dive in! The first sentence, “For as long as August Cates could remember, his ‘duck’ had ruined everything”. Okay, Tessa Bailey…you got me, I’m listening.

This is a marriage of convenience love story…and I loved it! August is my kinda man. Protective, alpha ex-Seal. There’s nothing to not to love. Natalie was fun too. Great story, loads of chemistry. Read it. You won’t regret it.

NATALIE AND AUGUST PLUS MARRIAGE OF CONVENIENCE YES YES AND YESSSS

  • Andrea Lesniewski

This may be my favorite Tessa Bailey so far! I laughed out loud…… August and Natalie are my favorite couple of hers.

  • Julia

She should release this one now. This plot sounds way more interesting than the first book.

  • Cheyenne

LOVED. This one stuck out to me more than the first, and the verbal sparring between Natalie and August? Unmatched. The epilogue had me tearing up too. Natalie and August forever and ever. Thank you.

This book flew to my list of top five Tessa Bailey books of all time. It has literally everything I love: it’s hate to love, but the hero is clearly in love with the heroine and even when he’s frustrated by her wants for her to be happy and safe and respected; it’s a relationship of convenience , it has a danger bang, and it’s got classic Tessa Bailey spice.

I know I’ve stood on my
author growth soapbox before with Tessa, but allow me to hop up one more time - as a longtime TB reader who’s been through most of her back catalog, I love to see fingerprints of her earlier work that really work for me (namely an alpha hero in a love/hate relationship with the heroine who still respects the fuck out of her) with some updates. Everyone in this book feels fleshed out, nuanced, and ready to be a good partner. I loved it, and I can’t wait to revisit August and Natalie again and again.

Thank you Avon and Edelweiss for the ARC!

Ok, I liked book one of this duology (Secretly Yours) but I love, love, LOVED this one. Unfortunately Yours may even pass the Bellinger sisters as my new favorite Tessa Bailey book.

Natalie Vos is a daughter of wine country royalty who is miserable in her hometown and is trying like hell to get out of Napa. Her last chance is her trust fund, but she learns her estranged father added a clause that she must be married to collect.

August Cates is a retired Navy SEAL on a very personal mission to start a winery but he is completely out of his depth and his business is going under.

A quickie marriage to the princess of wine country would lend August much needed credibility and allow Natalie to collect her inheritance. Unfortunately, they started off on a spectacularly bad foot and haven’t stopped fighting and sniping at each other since. But desperate times call for desperate measures.

I just fell in love with the characters in Unfortunately Yours. They are likeable and well-realized and their issues and baggage make their marriage-of-convenience (arguably the least believable of rom-com tropes) ring true. August is swoon-worthy in a traditionally masculine way but stays well clear of problematic. Natalie is smart and relatable.

Oh and it is spicy, spicy, spicy. Much more than spice than Secretly Yours, and spicer in my opinion than either the Bellinger sisters or Hot and Hammered series.

I read this book on a single day and I’m already ready to re-read it. 6 stars!

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

  • Robyn Shtadtlender

When Tessa Bailey turns her supporting characters into main characters it just doesn’t work for me. Like I really enjoyed reading It Happened One Summer, but I wasn’t able to finish Hook, Line and Sinker. I was able to finish this book, but I had to push myself through the last 100 pages or so. The interactions between August and Natalie became very repetitive - I hate you, tear my clothes off and ravage me, I hate you, I love you, I’m moving back to NY, I can’t live without you… They just didn’t do it for me in the same way as Julian and Hallie. 3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ rounded down.
Thank you to NetGalley & the publisher for the eARC.

I knew I was going to like this book from the small glimpses of the potential combustible nature of August and Natalie as a couple in Secretly Yours, but that did not prepare me for how much I LOVED reading this book by Tessa Bailey. Unfortunately Yours is one of her best!

Thank you NetGalley and Avon for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
