The Marquesan Journal of Edward Robarts 1797-1824 Reviews
-
One of the most comprehensive first-hand accounts on the long gone Marquesan society to be read, along with Crook's writings which by the way -still- proves so damn hard to get my hands on. Therefore, I really appreciated quotes from his work by Dening, especially on subjects regarding polyandry. The editorial work done by Dening is phenomenal, besides the introduction, the book without the footnotes would be incredibly lacking. The chance to directly fact-check Robart's claims through Crook, Krusenstern, Langsdorff et al. was not only helpful but also fun; reading all the things these men have written about one another.
It was quite interesting to read how Robarts gave "not wanting to take part in a mutiny against Captain Glasspoole" as the reason for his abandonment of New Euphrates, after which his native life began, and "not wanting to take part in an inner-tribal war, with his friends being on both sides" as the reason for his abandonment of Nukuhiva, after which his native life ended. Dening is skeptic in his introductory piece towards that being the real reason for Robart's desertion.
