The famous Prussian general and military strategist Carl von Clausewitz once said that politics is the continuation of war by other means. Had he lived long enough, he may well have been tempted to update his aphorism, substituting the word "soccer‟ for "politics‟.
What makes some soccer matches more important than others?
In certain cases, it is the competition for trophies and titles, while some clashes are much bigger than that. Undoubtedly the rivalries that have developed between certain soccer clubs throughout the years come close, and, on occasion, cross the line between acute tension and armed conflict. And, the root cause of such rivalries, often go way beyond sporting differences, embracing wider elements drawn from a divergence of economic, social, political and religious views and attitudes.
So prevalent are these derbies and rivalries throughout club football, irrespective of country or region, that in compiling a list of the fiercest, the hardest decision was which ones to leave out. Therefore, this book includes just a sample of some of the best-known elements of what is a much bigger picture.

Did you know?
The Spanish civil war which raged between 1936 and 1939 had a profound effect on the rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona, and the ripples of which remain even to this day. Backed by the major fascist powers of Europe, Adolf Hitler’s Germany and Benito Mussolini’s Italy, General Francisco Franco successfully led a coup against the Republican government which was based in Barcelona. That led to a lasting resentment towards that region from Franco after he came to power, who was trying to demonstrate that a different culture or view of society under his rule would not be tolerated. Real Madrid became known as Franco’s club, and was associated with the status quo, and conservatism.
Meanwhile, with the growing popularity of football, FC Barcelona became an outlet for people to express their views and sentiments, especially those Catalans who were bitterly opposed to Franco and his policies.

For Lovers of Football (Soccer)
This book is fantastic for anyone who loves football. It is the perfect guide for anyone who wants to learn about Football Rivalries around the world. This book is very organized and flows in an orderly manner. In each chapter, it tells the countries/ cities that the teams are from, when they first met and the distance between them. There is even a map to help us get a clear sense of how close or how far the teams are away from each other.
It provides in-depth information on Football Teams that have been rivals for years. It explains the origins of the rivalry and notable Incidents that happened because of the rivalry. It lists famous matches that the teams had against each other and how they managed to win the match. It even gives information on the members who successful switched teams
What I love most about this book is that it provides interesting facts about the rivals for example, In 1915 , four members from Liverpool and three members from MU was banned for live after a match,
This is a great book. It's well written and packed with a lot of information and it’s also simple and easy to understand.

For a book aiming to illuminate many of the worlds greatest rivalries, I found the structure led to a body of work that produced dull and limited content which became highly repetitive. The author ultimately failed to capture the essence of what most fans no doubt feel regarding their most hostile and important games with any significant insight. The high number of spelling mistakes compounded with several factual inaccuracies exemplified how poor this read was.
