It's Carnival time in New Orleans, and Scotty Bradley, ex go-go boy turned private eye, is looking forward to relaxing with his boyfriends, Frank and Colin, and partying it up right. But nothing ever seems to work out the way Scotty wants it. Not only is it cold and rainy, ruining his elaborate costume plans, but former FBI agent Frank has "issues" with dropping a hit (or two, or four) of Ecstasy. Hello Ecstasy at Mardi Gras is practically guaranteed in the Gay Bill of Rights Fortunately, Frank gets over himself, the weather clears up, Scotty's dealer, Misha, delivers the goods, and boys are off to the races. And that's when the real fun begins. After a night of partying, they come home to find the cops waiting for them. Misha has apparently been murdered and guess who was the last person to see him alive? Turns out his wheeling and dealing had gotten him into trouble with a lot of people--"including the Russian mob. And those guys don't play around. Suddenly Scotty's missing not just one but two boyfriends. And as the streets of Nola come alive in a hot human frenzy of sequins, music, dancing, and the sweat of thousands of revelers ready to throw caution and clothing to the wind, Scotty is in a desperate race to save the men he sometimes loves and keep Fat Tuesday from being the last day any of them ever see.

Mardi Gras Mambo (Scotty Bradley, #3) Reviews

  • Ije the Devourer of Books

This is book 3 in the Scotty Bradley mystery series and the best so far with many twists, turns and big surprises!! I really enjoyed it.

Gregg Herren the author, has two mystery series that are set in New Orleans: Chanse Macleod and Scotty Bradley. Scotty Bradley is the more light hearted series which follows the investigative exploits of Scotty the former go go dancer/fitness trainer. Scotty is also gifted with the sight and can read tarot cards.

Alas this gift doesn't prevent him from getting into trouble, stumbling across crimes, getting kidnapped and other stuff. In this story Scotty along with his two boyfriends Frank and Colin finds himself in the middle of an investigation when a local drug dealer gets shot.

And it couldn't have happened at a better time - Mardi Gras.

Scotty's investigation leads him into a maze of secrets both family secrets and the secrets of his boyfriends and other friends. And Scotty finds himself in a race against time as all the secrets come to a head!

This one was excellent with so many twists and turns. Not surprisingly this story is a LAMBDA nominee and the best so far in this series.

Mardi Gras Mambo is an even more engrossing read than the first two books in the Scotty Bradley series, starting out, as the title implies, where else but Mardi Gras, the biggest party of the year in New Orleans.

Readers who haven't read the previous books will be able to follow along. The same fun tone and Scotty’s signature narrative voice are very much a part of Mardi Gras Mambo as Scotty mentions his tips on what tourists shouldn’t do as well as clearing up some misconceptions. There are just as many steamy scenes for readers who look forward to them, as well. The shocking revelations of the plot will have the reader on the edge of his or her seat. Mardi Gras Mambo is possibly the most interesting entry in the Scotty Bradley series, and one that fans will definitely enjoy.

Sort of a gay detective Harlequin romance. Not my thing.

  • Michael

My favorite book in the series so far!

  • Alicia

That was enjoyable. Were there plot holes? Yes. Could it be because I randomly read the 3rd book in a series? Also yes. Was the entire thing super non plausible? Yes. But was it silly and fun? Also yes. Pretty fun to read after visiting New Orleans. Sort of made me want to go for Mardi Gras though it seems wild.

Perfect beach read, and at Marci Gras.

  • Jimmy

Scotty’s three-way relationship with Colin and Frank seems really weird to me, but makes for great fantasy! It’s Mardi Gras, and Scotty wants to show them a great time. That all comes to a screeching halt when the police meet him at his front door, again. His drug dealer is murdered and Scotty was the last one to see him alive. A big shock comes their way when they find out that he was married to their Aunt Sylvia?! Scotty meets the Goddess, and is told that both Frank and Colin are in danger. The trio decide to leave the investigation to the police. But, that comes to a halt when Scotty, dressed as a golden Mercury, chases Misha through the crowded Mardi Gras streets, to his parents house, for a BIG shock! Events are unraveling as family secrets are coming to the surface, and Frank has disappeared. The Goddess visits Scotty once again to remind him to have a brave heart and there is nothing that he can’t handle that the Universe puts in front of him.

This is one of those books that so poorly written that after a few pages I start to skim. I kept at it until about halfway through and gave up. I love reading gay-oriented novels, but first person narration can be tricky. If it's not done well, it's pretty stinky, sort of like this one. I was very disappointed.

  • Chris

Good gay mystery (again with a titch of the paranormal) in which Scotty's life goes spectacularly awry during the weekend before Mardi Gras. I must confess that I skim these every time they get a little too new agey for me. It doesn't seem to make a difference. :)

Whenever I'm missing New Orleans I look for a book set there. This series is great. It's not negative about the South or New Orleans. I enjoy Scott Bradley both as a gay stripper and detective. Love!

  • Michael

the plot twists are improbable but still a fun read.

  • Joe Cosentino

A terrific romantic mystery with the heart of New Orleans.
