Not working for me, because I didn't like Sabrina (airhead, kept putting her foot in her mouth and okay yes fine YOU DON'T HAVE FAT THIGHS, get over it) and I didn't like Jake (angry, condescending, self righteous). They spent most of the book being angry with each other. And public confessions always make me cringe.

Ambitious story that falls under the weight of the saccharine resolution to all the conflicts.

Heroine is Miss Georgia and from a rich connected Southern family. Had some tragedy in her past which she overcame but which makes all around her coddle her (she enjoys and uses this.)

Hero comes from prominent political Southern family. Father disgraced (by heroine's hand, no less), trying to regain glory days with help of aunt.

Father is disgraced but really not a bad sort. He had GOOD INTENTIONS!

I just couldn't wrap my head around all the issues the author tries to deal with: body image, rehabilitation of serious injuries, breaking of trust, family expectations, etc. I wish she had picked ONE and really explored it, instead of waving a magic wand and having all be right with everybody's world by THE END.

I picked this one up hoping to see more of Tyler and Bethany. I did. But I loved Jake and Sabrina. They were so funny together.

Her So-Called Fiance: Those Merritt Girls Book 1 is by Abby Gaines. It is about second chances and doing what you believe in.
Sabrina Merritt is the youngest of the Merritt girls and the half-sister of Megan and Cynthia. Jonah Merritt loved his second wife so much that on her death, that love went to Sabrina. He did his best to protect her as did her sisters. She wasn’t the lawyer that the other two were and wasn’t the smartest of the girls. She was, however, the most beautiful of them. She relied on her beauty to make her way in the world. She was finishing up her run at Miss Georgia but had been voted out of the Miss USA pageant on the first round. One judge’s comment about her “thick thighs” had hit the press around the country. Sabrina knew better; but she began to believe that was correct. Upon arriving home, she looked around to find Tyler Warrington who was to meet her. Instead, she found Jake Warrington. They had broken up five years before and she had hoped to never see him again. However, he extricated her from the Press and took her home. He wanted her to campaign for him to show her trust after being a whistle-blower for his Father’s taking a bribe. She then told him about her job as spokesperson for The Injured Kids Education Trust. She wanted to use her previous accident for the greatest good. She declined to back him publicly and went home. The next day, she learned the Education Trust was reluctant to have her as spokesperson because of the publicity of her thighs. To turn them back into favoring her, she told them she was engaged to Jake. Now to break the news to Jake.
This is fast-paced and shows the upheaval an unplanned announcement can make in a campaign. Will she get the job and will Jake win?

    Enemies become lovers.

I love how the external forces moved the plot forward. Certain scenes touched my heart. I really enjoyed their ride into falling in love. Wished to hear more about their married life.

Too much of sweetness that was indigestible. I did like the plot but the feelings portrayed by each character was a bit vague. However, good enough to rate it as 3 out of 5.

Well-written and entertaining. Near the beginning, I occasionally found it hard to empathize with the heroine, and throughout I sort of felt out of touch with the high-flying world these characters inhabit. Some of what happens strains credulity - particularly this business of the gubernatorial candidate having so much time without staffers, but maybe I have an over glamorized view of this level of politics. Anyway, I loved the freighted backstory these two have to navigate, and I found it a satisfying read. Really couldn't get into the secondary romance at all, though, and would probably give this a lower rating except for its fantastically dramatic climax and endearingly schmaltzy ending.

Full disclosure, the leading lady falls right into one of my least favorite categories--beautiful and no substance. She was intended that way and meant to evolve as the story progressed, but she still came off as shallow and vapid in her evolved state. The plot was pretty good, but I'm biased towards shitty characters, so...

I read this a while ago and while I can't remember a lot of it, bits and pieces are coming back. It just proves that love is the most powerful emotion ever but hate comes in a close second.
