The Womens Quarter and Other Stories from Pakistan Reviews

Fun, light read if one's looking to get out of a reading slump.

A delightful collection of short stories. Very well written and captures the personalities and lives of a range of characters. Although dated, the stories remain relevant and insightful.

I have read GA's brief but monumental work in it's original Urdu. GA is a master story teller, and perhaps the greatest short story writer of the twentieth century. His work although over seven decades old, is still reflective of the South Asian culture. His stories are set against undivided India (pre 1947) and for those who possess some grounding in the culture, they are literary masterpieces, where the greater verities of life form the underpinning of ordinary people's stories. His stories are perhaps more than Indian stories, for they are human stories, but the richness of the Indian Mughal culture, lends itself to the tales.

His stories are unique in that they do not leave you melancholic or touched, rather they leave you wondering about the stereotypes his characters represent. As you go along in life, you meet his protagonists, who in infinite ways, are a living proof of his fiction.

His fresh and unassuming style, lacking pomp and show, is not to be missed.
