This was a serviceable biography of Jefferson, but also a prize-winning example of a whitewash. Zero mentions of slavery. Plantations, tobacco, family estate, but no indication that those were supported by enslaved labor. There is a picture on page 13 of a well dressed Black man carrying a tea tray at a party. And the only irony pointed out in regard to Jefferson’s life is that of his death being on July 4. Because maybe being a slaveholder who says all men are created equal is beyond irony.
I know this is a children’s book, but hiding or ignoring slavery doesn’t make it go away, it just makes it harder for us to deal with its legacy.

These books by Troll Associates should be in every school library, they present biographies for young readers that are inspiring to both young and older readers. very well done. This is a good read

I loved the black and white illustrations and all the wonderful in-depth information into the early life of Thomas Jefferson. This small book chronicles his time from early childhood to when he completes his studies and was accepted into the practice of law. This is a wonderful resource for any school classroom or library for biographies for younger students onto high school even.

Informational, but not so entertaining. I would have this in my library for further reading, but I wouldn't read this with the class. The black and white pictures are dull.
