«I miei ricordi più belli io devo ancora viverli, il mio passato è ancora molto giovane». Così scriveva Christian Dior nel 1956, nel dare alle stampe questa sua autobiografia, ora per la prima volta pubblicata in italiano. Quasi un anno dopo, però, Dior moriva all’improvviso, e quelle pagine rimasero come la storia di tutta la sua vita. A originarle era stato un bisogno che lo stilista dichiarava sin dalle prime righe: «Esistono due Christian Dior: il Christian Dior pubblico e quello privato». Ed è per dire tutta la verità sul primo Dior, sul grande sarto di avenue Montaigne, che l’altro Christian Dior ha deciso di scrivere un libro di memorie. Proprio sul filo di questa ironica trovata narrativa della doppia identità Dior dipana i ricordi di una vita che ha segnato la storia dell’alta moda del Novecento. La voce narrante è quella del sarto schivo e pignolo, nato nella brumosa Normandia e trapiantato presto a Parigi, dove, dopo aver lasciato gli studi, insegue una vaga vocazione artistica, nel clima vivace della capitale francese. Entrato quasi per caso nella maison di Lucien Lelong, fu dopo la fine della guerra, nell’ottobre del 1946, che Dior fondò la sua casa di moda. È l’inizio di una rivoluzione: in poco meno di un anno il successo lo porta ad aprire una filiale a New York in cui si concepiscono abiti espressamente studiati per il mercato americano. Non a caso New Look era il nome della linea che lo lanciò e che affermò un’idea tutta nuova di femminilità: vitino di vespa, gonna a corolla, tessuti raffinati e accessori coordinati. Dior fu infatti il primo a lanciare per ogni collezione le linee di accessori di moda: borse, guanti, foulard, profumi. Una rivoluzione di costume vista da dietro le quinte: ecco cosa rende imperdibili queste pagine. Non c’è dettaglio che sfugga all’occhio e alla penna del geniale stilista: dal lavoro creativo e manuale del sarto alle superstizioni dello stilista di successo, dai vizi e capricci delle clienti alle piccole manie e fragilità delle mannequin, dalle esigenze del mercato al perfezionismo delle sfilate nella leggendaria maison. A chiudere questa girandola di ricordi eccezionali è una sorta di dichiarata riappacificazione di Dior con se stesso: «Sento che questa mia controfigura pubblica, il Christian Dior brillante e mondano, mi è servito e mi serve. Perché è lui che tiene in piedi tutta l’impalcatura, è lui che, anche con i suoi eccessi, fa vibrare le antenne del gusto. E finché ci sarà lui a proteggermi con la sua ombra, io potrò riservare a me stesso, Christian, la parte migliore. Quella che, dall’idea all’abito, è la mia ragione di vita: il mio lavoro. E così, a quasi dieci anni dalla nascita della mia casa di moda, io, per la prima volta, accetto di identificarmi con questo fratello, quest’altro me stesso che è il frutto della celebrità e che non mi somiglia».

Have never witnessed any man as pompous as Christian Dior ..... I wonder he must have subdued any editings on this .....It was tiring and irritating to read this although the actual matter of the biography is fairly interesting .

I started reading this book, because in the 2014 documentary Dior and I, Raf Simons mentioned that he started reading Dior's autobiography before taking over as creative director of the house, but it was too weird and he couldn't continue after only having read a few pages. I was intrigued, since I just started learning about fashion, and wanted to know as much as possible about famous fashion designers.
But I was also interested in this book, because I've watched a short documentary about Hugo Boss and his Nazi affiliations, and I learned that after leaving the army, and joining the fashion house of Lucien Lelong, Dior (and Pierre Balmain) designed dresses for the wives and mistresses of Nazi officers and French collaborators. This is especially interesting because during this time, Dior's sister, Catherine was a member of the French Resistance and was captured by the Gestapo and sent to a concentration camp until May 1945. However, the topic is only mentioned in a few sentences. It was shocking to learn that almost all major European fashion houses that still stand had Nazi affiliations to some extent and that they were able to survive due to this affiliation.
To be honest, reading this book was easier than what I expected, and while Dior often comes off as a pompous racist privileged asshole, the topics discussed in the book are quite interesting. Sometimes he is even funny.

attention I pay to details, because in matters of elegance, the
detail is as important as the essential. When it is bad, it
destroys the whole effect.
Dressmaking is a means of expression like any other,
and I have tried to impose my taste and temperament through
my clothes. A model must simultaneously keep in line and
surprise by storm. As a garment, it must respect certain laws;
but as a creation it must dare certain extravagances. There is
room for audacity in the framework of tradition.
A particular fashion pleases, or ceases to please, according
to complex influences. The most successful fashion wears it-
self out the quickest, because it is overly imitated. Obviously,
uniforms have the longest life.
I also really liked the part where he discussed the difference between American and French consumption and the abundance of everything that welcomed him in the United States. -

I dont often read non-fiction, but my fashion side couldnt resist reading this special book written by Christian Dior. It's not quite a biography, but more of an overview of the process he goes/went though starting his brand, and every collection. It's very interesting, but more so if you like the fashion industry. If not, you might easily lose interest.
Since it was in the original version, I got a sense of Christian Dior's personnality, and how french he is. And I love it ! Even more so that he knows it and makes sure to not lose himself.
You get a glimpse of his life in the last part of the book, of his famliy, but I feel like his overall a private man, hence the short part on his life as opposed to having the whole book be about him. -
Hoy toca que os descubra un libro con el que yo misma me encontré por casualidad, pero que me encandiló desde el primer momento: la autobiografía de Christian Dior.
A parte de ser un libro deliciosamente escrito, está bien estructurado en tres secciones que nos sumergen de lleno en el universo Dior:
La primera parte versa sobre cómo se creó la casa… una historia curiosa y muy interesante de cómo Monsieur Dior empezó en la moda y pasó por varios trabajos antes de llegar a montar, por fin, su taller. De esta etapa me llamó poderosamente a atención cómo el taller apenas ha cambiado desde entonces. En las palabras de Monsieur Dior pude reconocer perfectamente las estancias que yo misma visité hace unos meses en mi visita a la casa… con lo que me pareció muy familiar. En esta sección nos introduce, también, en su proceso de diseño. Unas pequeñas pinceladas de cómo el gran genio llegó a concebir su New Look, y los motivos que se esconden en los entresijos de sus dibujos.
En la segunda parte, se nos introduce en el mundo de cómo una colección pasa desde el cuaderno de dibujo de Monsieur Dior hasta la compra por parte de los clientes. Fase a fase, nos desgrana todos los detalles y secretos de los talleres, las modelos, las clientes… con algún que otro cotilleo muy entretenido.
Por último, Monsieur Dior cierra su libro con unas breves palabras mucho más personales, su biografía propiamente dicha antes de convertirse en un genio de la costura. Con una forma muy peculiar (a través de la arquitectura y la decoración) nos muestra un viaje a través de su infancia y adolescencia, años de estudio y primeros trabajos.
Como os he dicho al comienzo, se trata de un libro súper entretenido, especialmente para todos aquellos que sientan un tironcito en el corazón en lo que a la moda se refiere, como es mi caso. Es cortito y fácil de leer, y seguro que disfrutáis con su lectura tanto como yo. Lo único que he echado en falta en este manuscrito es alguna que otra fotografía más… ¡por aquello de alimentar la curiosidad malsana!

È un libro autobiografico di Christian Dior. Dior inizia subito dicendo che il sé pubblico e il sé privato sono due Christian diversi.
Il libro è diviso in 4 parti.
La prima (come sono diventato Christian Dior), qui parla poco della sua infanzia, parla per lo più di come ha aperto la sua casa di moda e cita molti suoi amici che l'hanno aiutato.
La seconda parte (dall'idea all'abito) parla di come si prepara una collezione e le sfilate per presentare i modelli al pubblico . Questa parte è stata la più difficile da leggere perché usa termini tecnici che non sempre comprendevo. Però alla fine prima della penultima parte ci sono delle foto di alcuni suoi abiti, di lui e i suoi genitori.
La terza parte (una casa di moda) parla delle sue mannequinnes (indossatrici) che dice sono una parte importante e poi anche della sua decisione di espandersi in America.
La quarta e ultima parte (l'avventura della mia vita), nonostante la premessa di parlare esclusivamente di moda, parla della sua infanzia, degli amici e di come è riuscito a sopravvivenza durante le due guerre mondiali.
In conclusione ho trovato la scrittura molto scorrevole ed è senz'altro un romanzo interessante. Christian Dior l'ho trovato un po' snob a tratti, ma nonostante ciò lui era ed è ancora adesso un pilastro della moda. -
I was quite shocked by this book. 1. It's written in a very poetic manner. Almost like a love letter to clothing. 2.) Dior hid a lot about himself. He managed to tell his story without getting super personal. He explained where he lived and people but you never got a good glimpse into his internal musings of a more private nature. I wanted to know what his thoughts were on the war? He did call other cultures primative and he did use the racial language of his time but he doesn't come across as say Chanel who worked with the Nazis. 3.) I had always thought he had started sewing young. Come to find out he started his career in his 30's. I was under the impression that sewing was something passed down in his family but no he actually worked under another couturier for a couple of years.
I'll be honest here...Dior is not a favorite designer of mine. After you delve into clothing by Olga-look up the romanov seamstress. Charles Worth and my all time favorite Charles James. Or honestly regular work of historical clothing it pales in comparison but this book was a nice read. -

Myśl, która przewijała mi się wielokrotnie podczas czytania tej książki to, "Czy Christian Dior pisząc tą książkę chciał się poniżyć?". Rozumiem ze była ona pisana prawie 70 lat temu, jednak od strony współczesnego czytelnika było to strasznie upokarzające.
Sięgając po AUTOBIOGRAFIĘ, spodziewałam się, że dowiem się więcej o drodze Diora do sukcesu jego młodości i jak radził sobie ze sławą. Dostałam natomiast może 3 rozdziały o młodości (z czego 2 na końcu książki, co moim zdaniem wyglądało jakby ktoś przy redakcji zapomniał dodać ich wcześniej, więc wkleił je na końcu. Były tam sztucznie dodane, kiedy idealnie pasowaly by na początku), a cała reszta książki poświęcona jest temu jak działał jego dom mody, co owszem mogło być ciekawe ale ta dysporoporcja tego była nie adekwatna(?). Już jakoś 2 rozdziale bez żadnych wiadomości o młodości zostajemy postawieni przed faktem, że on już jest w tym świecie mody jako rysownik, kiedy właśnie najbardziej interesująca dla mniebyłao to co go skłoniło do takiej ścieżki kariery a nie innej, co było poprostu dla mnie z góry demotywujące do daleszegi czytania.
Głównymi faktami jakie zapamiętam po przeczytaniu tej książki to ze Christian Dior był seksistą, uważał że wszytko przyszło do niego od losu, a on "nigdy nie przypuszczał by, że coś takiego mogło by go spotkac", oraz, że on nie był na to gotowy i musiał odzizli swoje prywatne ja od publicznego i grac rolę.
To wszytko przedstawione w taki sposób, że miałam ochotę wykrzyczeć mu w twarz że jak jeszcze raz powie ,,że nie był na to gotowy,, to chyba go zdziele w jego grobie. Czego się spodziewał jak nie jest się przygotowanym na sławę to nie wybiera się zawodu w którym oczywista jest chęć wybicia się i co z tym związane sławy.
Jedyny jak mi się zdaje plus tej książki to to, że mimo tego jak bardzo mnie nudziło, była napisana tak, że się to przyjemnej czytało.
Jednak chcąc nie chce książka mnie potwornie nudziło i odliczałam strony do końca.
Musiałam to napisać jakkolwiek mało sensu to ma aby jakoś wylać swoją złość związaną z tą książką.
