I really enjoyed the IDEA of this story. That's what my rating is based on. However, I can NOT recommend it to anyone because the writing was disjointed, confusing, and skipped around so much at the beginning that it took me a while to figure out the when and various who's. Also, there is no indication if a sequel and the ending is frustratingly incomplete!!!

(3.5) Using the book Lord of the Flies as a jumping off point, Norman creates a thriller which spotlights a group of highly flawed individuals who find strength in each other- and the rest of the world had better beware. Having just read the Golding classic, I found the way the Norman characters adopted and adapted the roles of Ralph, Jack, Roger, Piggy and Simon rather interesting. Though they perverted the nature of the characters, some elements still held true. The groups association and interests start out reasonably, but they quickly go pear-shaped, revealing the horror of each persons' true nature. The "game" was a disturbing and absorbing concept, and the reader will likely get a few chills as the next Beast is chosen. The plot is strong enough to carry through a few weak spots, and the ending is well crafted and rather fitting. Though very different from the story it pays homage to, Ralph's Children is also a tale of lost innocence, and I enjoyed the juxtaposition between the two.

I can't decide between three and four stars for this book. The plot was awesome, loved the ideas but there is something about Norman's writing style that drives me crazy. I often found myself re-reading a sentence because her word order and/or choices were so convoluted. And, no, it is not the British thing, there was actually very little British slang in the book. I just felt that it didn't flow like it could have which bogged down the story when it should have been fast-paced. But, I reiterate, the plot is brilliant and that is what will keep me reading since end seems like the perfect set up for a sequel. I'm recommending this book to teens as well as adults but there is some swearing in it.

Well written but a bit too nasty. Nothing nice seemed to happen
