The point about Eton is that it is not an anachronism, coasting along on the coat-tails of a glorious and privileged past, but a school which turns out boys who have now, as they had then, a hold on contemporary life in a way no other school has achieved.
Eton Voices: Interviews Reviews

Not a terribly coherent book but it did enlighten me about the contrast between the posh rich and powerful world of the British elite and the rather brutal conditions at Eton for their kids...at least at the time this book was written. Vicious intramural sporting events, blatant tone of homosexuality, freezing dorm rooms in winter, but brilliant scholars teaching the students. A nutshell picture of England, I suppose. Eyewitness accounts by former students bring the subject alive for the American reader who may not know much about English higher education.
