I'll confess up front that I only read "A Clash of Eagles" by Alan Smale. And the 5 stars are for his story. In the interest of full disclosure, he's a friend. But I genuinely loved his story. His alternate history wherein the Roman Empire actually survives, thrives, and sends a party to find gold in the New World is so well-done. It's such a cool concept and so well executed. I also found his main character really compelling. I definitely recommend reading this story!

This is a collection of Novellas. It's a little uneven. I really enjoyed "Snow Comes to Hawk's Folly" and the "Curious Adventure of the the Jersey Devil," but I couldn't get into "Dangerous Creatures." It was all too silly, with hardly any plot.

So far, I've only read Alan Smale's "A Clash of Eagles," but I enjoyed it so much that I rated the book, as this story alone is worth the price of admission.
