The bird kingdom represents some of the most astonishing and varied animals with whom we share our world. Images of beauty, humor, grace, strength, and otherworldliness dazzle the reader on each page.
While birds have intrigued humans for centuries, we have not always been very empathetic with them. I especially appreciated that the text advised readers not to be afraid to feel kinship with these animals or ascribe them emotions, in fact, birds are very emotional, perceptive, and intelligent beings. As alien as some of them appear, sound, and behave, scientific observation points to them sharing more, mind-wise, with us than we may realize. Information about bird emotions and intelligence appears in several places throughout the book, and this was a breath of fresh air—I don’t feel we would have seen this 20 years ago, for example. (Although, the book could have done better than its rather lukewarm comment regarding chickens; they are indeed
intelligent, and it goes beyond having a social order.)
Appreciate, celebrate, and learn to preserve the world of birds with this gorgeous book. -

I love this book. Beautiful photos of birds and all for a great cause. As I’ve said in a previous review, Joel Sartore is a great photographer and a great person as well who genuinely cares about wildlife and doesn’t want any species to go extinct.🦜🦚🦩🪿🐦⬛🦤🪺🐦🐤🐧🦉🦃🦢🦆🦅🕊️

The Photo Ark project is wonderful, and the photos are superb, but this is a very poorly produced book from Nat Geo, in a format too small to do justice to many of the photos, especially those that end up over 2 pages. This book feels like something done on the cheap to exploit bird lovers in this Year of the Bird. It could have been so much better, and it cheapens the quality of Joel Sartore's work.

I initially borrowed this book just to look at the pictures. The information provided in the book is enlightening and gives the reader a stronger understanding of what is happening with the birds around. I was pleasantly surprised.

Birds are pretty and I love them.
-
Beautiful photos of birds, so many I've never heard of. Just enough reading to give you basic facts, great book!
-
Beautiful heavy coffee-table book, the kind some of us never read the text of even when we own the book and have plenty of time. If your library has this, at least flip through it.

Sartore continues his quest to photograph every species on the planet, starting with those in captivity. This volume focuses on birds. Filled with photographs of many, many birds and aviary information in short essays scattered throughout by Noah Strycker.
I absolutely LOVED The Photo Ark book. I really like this one too, but the essays in this are more frequent (though shorter than the ones in The Photo Ark). I couldn't help but feel like I wanted more photos and a bit less text. The information in the text is pretty basic info on birds and conservation of birds. I feel like none of it was new, but I did used to teach Biology so I know bird anatomy and physiology pretty well and all the bird conservation stuff I learned previously through reading The Birds of Pandemonium. Perhaps if I were less knowledgable about birds I'd have found the text sections more worthy of the space. The photographs are fantastic. I can't wait for Sartore's next book.
P.S. I think it is somewhat humorous that the person they got to write for this edition of Photo Ark is named Noah.

Wow! What a great book! Seeing the species that are slowly disappearing from the planet really makes you stop and think about what you’re doing. Conservation is such a big deal and saving these endangered birds can only be a good thing for us as humans. Once you read this book, get out there and help if you can. We need to preserve the species...not just birds, but so many others. Just do it. Please.
