Actual recipes don't begin until you are 40% into the book; this is a teaching manual directed at training the reader towards a nearly fat free, low sodium, cholesterol reduced diet designed to be 1,500 calories a day. It does encourage varied food choices, but best used as a starting point.

I bought this book because I was recently diagnosed with high blood pressure and wanted to learn about the role diet plays in heart disease. The book is an excellent reference for dietary matters, such as the difference between types of fats, vitamins and minerals for a healthy heart, and the role of fiber. But don't buy it for the recipes. Many of the recipes are not low sodium some have sodium contents of over 500 mg per serving. I don't understand why the authors would include recipes that are not low in sodium in a book about heart health.

After my husband had a heart attack, I realized that my typical Italian based meals were not helping him! So I checked out a bunch of "heart healthy" cookbooks from the local library and just started cooking in a whole new way. This cookbook is by far the best onethe first half of the book is informational. It teaches you how to eat, how to live and how to process the entire event of a heart attack! But my favorite part is the recipes they are truly delicious! As my husband and I say, they aren't just "decent" and "good for a healthy recipe" they are good enough that you would serve them to friends or at dinner parties! The crucial element is fresh ingredients and lots of vegetableswhich we weren't big fans of before but love now! Our faves are the stews there is a Mexican Barley Risotto that even our three boys eat! We also like the Winter Vegetable Stew served over polenta, and the fish recipes with citrus zest. I've gone through about 30 recipes and only had one dud! I have recommended this book to friends and everyone loved it!
Highly recommend! -
I would never eat slot of the menu choices

I was greatly disappointed that the recipes were so far fetched. I had hoped for a practical guide to help me fix different foods with easily obtained ingredients. I live in a small town, so many ingredients are unheard of or not available. The heart advice was good and helpful, but it was not worth what I paid.

I was tuned into this book by an article in Diabetic Living Magazine. The draw was about the 40 heart healthy foods and how to incorporate them into your diet. I tracked down this book. Where else? On . I ordered it. It arrived just as expected. The book is not a fancy full of photos book. Rather small green typea little hard to read. But as I review it, I find it has the authority of experience of the Cleveland Clinic and the expertise of authors form the prestigious Joslin Diabetic Center. As a person who is on the edge for diabetes and heart disease, I love to be fully equipped with the best information I can to maintain my current health.

Great recipes for a healthier heart. We knew what we were getting since my wife had brought several cook books home from the public library when I was released from the hospital after having a stent put in my heart. This cook book was the best, and we knew we needed a copy for our kitchen.
