This book covers shading, light, shadows, line weight, and blending. It moves quickly through these concepts to actually showing parts of the face. I like that it isolates the ear, nose, eye, lips, and hair before moving on the full faces. Very helpful without being overwhelming like some art books can be.

I draw portraits for a living and it never grows old. Familiar, yes, but not old. This is because every single face is unique (even those of twins) every single time. I even have a degree in art but I'm self taught in portraiture. This is the first time I've ever really paid attention to a book about drawing a face! I feel the author covered the important stuff like shape, line, and shading, but I find that it's best to learn by observing what's being drawn. People tend to draw from imagination. It won't get them confident in drawing from real life. However, this is a great first book. Remember to apply consistency, patience, and enthusiasm! It will take you far!

This book is good for beginners with a step by step approach to sketching faces. I especially like the part that shows you how to draw an eye step by step, with a very clear description of how to do it. The book covers all basics and techniques you need to start enjoying drawing portraits, even as a beginner.
