The Mystery of Dr. Johnsons Death: A Spiritual Scandal in the Punjab Reviews

This book cleared up a lot of questions for me. I am a follower of the path of Sant Mat, the lineage from Sant Kabir. Sant Mat has had it's share of controversy, primarily over who was who's successor in the various lines that have branched out from Kabir and Dharam Das. But the most interesting controversy was the Death of Dr. Julian Johnson, the man who wrote PATH OF THE MASTERS, which became a classic in the Spiritual Path of Surat Shubda Yoga, inner light and sound yoga, which is actually a controlled NDE for those adept at the method. Dr. Johnson, I was told, had an accident back in February of 1939, in which he fell and hit his head on a rock. This, it turns out is a million miles from the truth. The people involved in this melodrama and the events of it, would make a great movie. The book explains that Johnson, an elderly man at the time, was accidentally killed by a hard blow to the face which sent him backward where he fractured his skull on either a tile floor, or a door jam on that floor. The events leading up to this fatal blow, are fraught with people lying.mostly Dr. Julian Johnson's wife, whose erratic behavior started the melee in the first place. Needless to say, the whole tragic event was ruled an accident. This is great reading, I hope you buy it and see for yourself.

Truly this little book is a gripping narrative that reads like a professional investigative journalistic piece. I was never a member of RSS but I did read Johnson's book, Path of the Master's, in 1978. I was always curious how he passed on. Now I know. Pretty shocking story about folks who supposedly preached love and compassion and nonviolence. This story proves just how human all the players really were. It tears away the curtain of an illusion. The book is really well sourced with documentation; letters, photo's, etc.

Writing a review would pretty much reveal the outcome — why spoil it? It's a small book (a fast read) and I think its main contribution is to eliminate the various speculations concerning the death of Dr. Johnson. In my opinion the author convincingly narrows down the possibilities of the actual occurrences at the time of the death.
For me the most important and interesting aspect of the book is the included letter written by Dr. Johnson to acquaintances in the U.S. The letter has nothing to do with the death. It should be noted that the letter is a transcription of the original letter, so one can only hope that it was faithfully copied. -
