A goldsmiths daughter who eludes the Prince of Darkness, three wandering brothers born from a walnut tree, the Princess of Fantasistan, the case of the Shahs lost ruby ring, the leopard and the Sultans emissary, the Cook and the Unforgettable Sneeze These are just some of the enchanting stories described in Tales from the Bazaars of Arabia, a collection of classic folktales gathered from Arabia, Afghanistan, Persia and Turkey. Each story is alive with vivid characters beggars and kings, merchants, witches and djinns and threaded with universal motifs of fantasy and magic, fate and karma, good and evil. With spirit and passion, Amina Shah here illuminates the exoticism of bygone worlds and resurrects the memories and traditions of some of the greatest storytelling cultures in the world.

    Interesting stories!

I am no stranger to the world of Arabian Nights inspired fiction. This collection of lighthearted tales from several Near Eastern countries is a delight. While the standard themes witches, djinns, magic rings, talking antelopes are explored, I can honestly say that I was not familiar with the precise story line of a single one of the 25+ tales. (That is quite unusual for fiction hearkening from this neck of the woods, where the same themes have been batted and re batted about for better than a thousand years.) The stories are simple enough to be read aloud to older children, yet sophisticated enough to captivate the armchair traveler or the anthropologically oriented scholar. All in all, this was a most satisfying chrestomathy.

A goldsmith's daughter who eludes the Prince of Darkness!
I have thoroughly enjoyed these stories and the way the author has written them. It is great to read one story just before going to sleep.
    Highly recommended!
I will be getting books from this author!
