Hypnosis: is it actually real? What causes its strange effects? And can everyone easily learn to do it?
Since the seminal work of hypnosis pioneer James Braid in the 1840s, the dominant model for understanding hypnosis has been that it is simply a special state (popularly referred to as 'hypnotic trance') that renders people unusually responsive to suggestion. By this model, the practice of hypnosis is simply that of the induction of hypnotic trance, followed by the delivery of suggestions for the desired results.
By summer 2008, James Tripp had been working professionally with hypnosis for 6 years. Whilst he had used what he had learned to great effect with his clients (from manual therapy to coaching and changework), it had become increasingly clear that something was amiss with the traditional trance model instead of his clients responding to suggestion as a result of entering 'trance', they were apparently entering 'trance' as a result of being given suggestions. The cart seemed very much before the horse.
This led Tripp to embark on a mission to break down and rebuild hypnosis and suggestion work; to uncover how it really worked and also to see if it could be done effectively and efficiently. To find a suitable laboratory for his research he stepped out of his hypnotherapy office and onto the streets of London.
Across the next year he developed consistent methods for the effective evocation of classic hypnotic phenomena without using trance inductions; simply structuring suggestions and making requests that worked with people's everyday cognitive faculties to create mind bending results.
In 2009 Tripp started demonstrating his work and sharing his ideas via the Hypnosis Without Trance blog. The content was divisive to say the least while some traditionalists were upset or angered by the assertions, many others were liberated and empowered by the material.
“Hypnosis Without Trance has blown my mind and completely changed my thoughts on how hypnosis works with my clients – it's clicked together a lot of gaps that my traditional learning couldn’t explain…” Michelle Marsh, (Hypnotherapist)
"I think this is the most clear and understanding approach I have ever seen or read. Thanks a lot!” Raul de la Horra (Hypnotist, Psychotherapist and Magician)
This book represents the culmination of that period of experimentation and rebuilding, presenting a new central model for hypnosis (The Hypnotic Loop). Further to this it extensively unpacks the tools, tactics and psychological subtleties required for the effective facilitation of powerful hypnotic experiences.
Hypnosis Without Trance is for you if you are looking to understand how hypnosis really works, and how you might better facilitate it. Whether you are a student of hypnosis, established practitioner or curious spectator, its clear exposition will significantly deepen your understanding and grasp of this fascinating craft.
"Definitely the next important big step for me – a practicing hypnotherapist for over 20 years. Absolutely brilliant! Thank you!!" Richard Whitehurst (Hypnotherapist)
"I gained understanding of how hypnosis really works from HWT than anywhere else, and think it's a must for anyone serious about hypnosis." Lazarus Stone (Professional Mentalist)
"Using this approach I have gained confidence and I am far relaxed as a hypnotist than any time in the past 20 years." Gary Plumridge (Hypnotherapist)
Hypnosis Without Trance: How Hypnosis Really Works Reviews
-
James Tripp has finally put his thoughts, techniques and methodology down in book form. His approach to hypnosis is like a dance. Both participants, the operator (hypnotist) and co operator (client/subject) flow along together with the hypnotist leading the subject further and further into various hypnotic phenomena. James spends quality time dissecting and explaining his approach so that the reader has a complete road map for putting HWT into practice immediately. I’ve always loved learning from James as he truly is curious about how hypnosis works and the experiences his subjects are having. He reminds us of the power utilization and pacing and leading have in creating a hypnotic loop where ideas can be seeded. The book is well written and presented for beginners as well as seasoned hypnosis professionals. All who have an interest in how to induce hypnosis will find golden nuggets in these pages.

The content seems good & makes sense but I can't get through the book bec what he can say in a few words he says in many words. That makes it confusing & time consuming as I have to read things 2 3 times to get it clear.

I didn't get a lot of *new* information from this because I'm familiar with James' work, but it was completely worth reading, and I'll be going through it again soon. I've checked out a fair number of hypnosis teachers/trainers over the last eight years or so, but there are only a small handful that I would recommend learning from, and James is at the top of that short list.

If you're interested in a deeper understanding of hypnosis than just scripts and shiny new techniques James Tripp breaks down his understanding of what's really going on and shares many great theoretical distinctions as well as practical principles to show you how to develop a deeper mastery of the art of crafting hypnotic experiences with your clients, subjects, or co operators.

There are a lot of big ideas here. James Tripp strips away the woo woo of ‘trance’; dismisses ‘mind control’ metaphors of hypnosis (“If hypnosis really were mind control your average stage hypnotist would be ruling the world rather than selling tickets to watch people cluck like chickens”); and pushes aside the complications of change work with paying clients (the conceit of the book is that the reader seeks to use hypnosis to stick someone’s hand to a table, as a fun experiment), to reveal an accessible model of conversational influence.
Whatever kind of communication you are involved in, the book will be an eye opener, and when you apply the approaches here to your everyday work, it will take your influence to the next level. -
James has a real knack of explaining things and demistifying.

James Tripp's views on hypnosis are deep, original and slightly provocative. He abandoned the concept of "hypnotic trance" and focused on communication and collaboration between co operators. The philosophy underlying his work is systemic and humanistic. The book contains many interesting and useful ideas. All explanations are detailed and clear. Examples are easy to understand.
Great book! -
James Tripp, the author, is an articulate and thoughtful highly experienced practitioner of hypnosis and change work. He is a great teacher and speaker.
This book extends the insights into hypnosis that started with James Braid 170 years ago that hypnosis is a collaborative process that is interactive even though the external appearance is of an "operator" and "co operators" his terms for attempting to change the jargon. These terms are still metaphors connected to the programming computer metaphor so popular in the NLP, psychology, hypnosis and psychotherapy communities.
The book really does re cognise that the process of hypnosis is really a form of coaching or maybe seduction which brings out the innate superpowers or magic of the mind body. The book takes the next step away from the frame that a hypnotist does something to the hypnotised. He certainly helps engender the respect that all good hypnotists have for their partners in the process.
It is very practical step by step reframe of hypnosis and (though not the direct target) NLP, because of it alignment with that art and science. By the end of this book you will have a great foundation for an ethical and respectful practice of hypnosis for fun and therapy. -
He is a good salesman, granted. And maybe even a good Hypnotist.
But one has to admire the audacity with which some guy who didn’t even finish school tries to judge a phenomenon consciousness and trance that some of the best scientists are struggling with.
In fact: he claims things without the tiniest proof or logical argument.
However, the best Hypnotist ever, Milton H. Erickson, also didn’t have a very sound theoretical basis for these subject matters, because you don’t need one.
Hypnosis works!
