Back in print, the most authoritative overview on the beloved Bauhaus Renaissance man and pioneer of abstraction, the first artist to "take a line for a walk"The many books on Paul Klee (1879 1940) published over the years should not obscure the fact that there has been no new, comprehensive Klee overview since Will Grohmann’s oft reprinted 1954 monograph. With Paul Klee: Life and Work, the Zentrum Paul Klee has set out to fill this gap, drawing on a wealth of new resources including the Klee family’s archives, much of which is published here for the first time.

Life and work are truly integrated in this massive, 344 page volume: Klee’s vast body of work is surveyed chronologically, as the book narrates his life alongside the abundant reproductions of drawings, paintings, watercolors, sculptures, puppets and numerous archival documents and photographs (nearly 500 reproductions in total).

The book divides Klee’s career into eight periods: “Childhood and Youth”; “Munich and the Encounter with the Avant Garde”; “World War I and the Breakthrough to Success”; “At the Bauhaus in Weimar”; “Master of Modern Art”; “The Move to Dusseldorf and the Nazi Rise to Power”; “First Years of Emigration in Bern”; and “Final Years.”

The result of many years of research and labor, this magisterial publication demonstrates conclusively why Klee numbers among the most influential and best loved artists of the past 100 years.

As a Paul Klee fan boy, this book is way out there.

Excellent bio of Paul Klee and his work. It is lavishly illustrated and beautifully produced. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in his work

  • Sandra Sloan77

This is a superb book with loads and loads of colour photos of the work

  • Nat

That is a nice book, especially if you interested in life facts and biography of Mr. P.Klee.
Honestly, I expected to find loads of pictures of his works in this book after I checked it’s volume and After I got it i was disappointed because I have not found many pictures I really expected to see there. There are load of black and white photos , documentaries of his life and work and that is interesting, but for the special part of the readers, and, unfortunately, I was not among them. I would prefer to get high quality large scale pictures, which in full illustrate his works periods. I like very much Aquarelles of his Tunis journey but there are just few put in this book, not the best ones and not in the appropriate scale. Also, what has upset me the titles under each picture say just the name and the year. For me it is important to know also the canvas sizes and were it is taken from (name of the museum, private collection etc). I do not know why, but they put this info in the last pages of the book.so you could not simply look at the picture and read all about it in the title, you have to go the the end of the book and search there all the info required very complicated any stupid.
so, if I saw this book as it is at first I woulda not buy it, I think. I live in Iseaek and that is complicated to send things back, so I kept it so will read and memorize the biography facts ))))

Very informative, well designed, most complete and interesting book about the life of Klee. His art pieces were carefully curated, BUT big but! there are just not that many photos of his fabulous paintings, very disappointing.
