'This terse account of an American girl's breakdown and treatment gains its considerable power from an objectivity that is extraordinary considering the nature of the material. Sylvia Plath's attention had the quality of ruthlessness. Imagery and rhetoric is disciplined by an unwinking intelligence.' Observer

The bell jar is a Classic, we all know that, but I'm usually very skeptical reading books that are very famous and much liked. The bell jar didn't disappoint. The story is about a female character who in the beginning tries to find her place in the fashion industry, working hard and living a wild and eventful life, but in a not romanticised way. Silvia Plath shows the struggles with sexism and mental illness females have to go through, while tha main character themselves is deeply flawed too (e.g. racism, depression etc.)I felt like the representation was well done, since the depression wasn't plainly announced like it's done in many other literary pieces, but you could feel it creeping up on the character slowly, see her drifting off her path and failing to find her place in the busy city New York.I would recommend this book to someone who is open for a slow story with maybe not much action but a lot of emotions and reality.
