Sanzo Wada (1883 1967) was an artist, teacher, costume and kimono designer during a turbulent time in avant garde Japanese art and cinema. Wada was ahead of his time in developing traditional and Western influenced colour combinations, helping to lay the foundations for contemporary colour research. Based on his original 6 volume work from the 1930s, this book offers 348 color combinations, as attractive and sensuous as the books own design.

This book is amazing. The intro is in Japanese I translated it with Google translate on my cell phone and the translation In English is actually is in the dust jacket in the back. Very accurate I might add.

I read the reviews before buying this and someone said there was no reference to the colors, there absolutely is. In the back you can find a CMYK color combination for every color in the book.

Also in the back of the book every color is duplicated five times so you can cut them out and mix and match as you please.

Great little reference book with a combination of colors that are long forgotten and tie Japanese history.

Someone also said this book is the size of a pack of cigarettes and this is also incorrect. It is fairly small but it is a reference book so it will fit in your pocket or backpack, purse, briefcase, etc. basically the same size as a pocket dictionary. Easy to hold and flip through but also easy to store away and carry around.

I teach fine art at college level and I will be recommending this book to all my students.

I don't read Japanese so maybe color codes are included.

This size of the book makes it difficult to use as a reference. Not much bigger than a packet of cigarettes. This makes it hard to hold open to a given page, especially if you were able to write down color combination, which, basically, you can not. Which brings me to my 2nd gripe.

There are no color model codes to use when mixing paints or specifying Photoshop colors. No CYMK, no RGB, not even Pantone.

From a practical perspective, this book is no than an attractive curiosity.

This books is pretty intuitive, but the text in the front is daunting. BUT: you DONT need to understand a single word of Japanese to understand this book. The front text is a short history and how to guide. I'll save the trouble. Please note: the combinations do reflect just the original compiling artist's aesthetic. There are also no neons or metalloids included in this, so it's by no means comprehensive of all good looking color combos.

The way you use it is as follows:
Look for the main color you want to showcase towards the back of the book (page 260). Next to that color there will be a list of numbers. They seem random but don't fear!

Pages 26 257 have color themes using that color. It's a little confusing because the font for the page number and the color combo number are the same, but the color combo is bigger. The color themes progress from pairs to trios to quads, so you can be as simple or as complex as you'd like.

The final pages (281+) are actually swatches you can cut out and combine yourself! Obviously this book can't give you all the possible combinations of these colors, but 335 ready made swatches really goes a long way for artist's block.

For digital artists, the digital version may be a better bet, but if you do end up with the physical copy and want to make a swatch, the color listings on page 260+ have the exact CMYK code.

In short, if you find yourself seriously stumped when it comes to attractive harmonious color combos, this is a resource that will quickly become your best friend.

First off, I want to start off with informing you that there isnt much reading when it comes to this book. However, if you're dying to read the opening page, I recommend downloading the Google translate app. You can hover over it and itll translate it to whatever other language you want.

For any artist out there that gets stuck painting things with the same color schemes or are afraid to try new ones, I recommend buying this book. It's small so you can take it everywhere with you. It offers almost every single good color combination you can think of. I think this is something every single artist should have in their supply kit just in case.

    very easy to use.
I start in the back index when looking for colors that coordinate. it’s just like any other index but with colors instead of words. I’ve attached photo to show what I mean.

it’s a bit larger than pocket size. which is perfect for a reference book.

if you want to use translate the Japanese you can use google translate. Just take a picture of the word/page and upload into the app and it will translate for you.

I must say the book is really nice..an colors are in english as well so u can tell what they are without guessing but the details of the book itself like the author an inspiration an so on but it’s serving the reason it was intended for color deco an combination

An extremely intriguing, little book. And I emphasize little (see attached photo). It is hand size. The quality of presentation is just wonderful. There is a brief introductory text in Japanese with no English translation, but that's OK since you can overcome this with Google translate app. The color schemes in the book have both Japanese and English names/titles.

I am certain to enjoy countless hours perusing this little gem of a book.

Excellent book. Just what I needed for colour inspiration. Someone else has done the bulk of the thinking for me.

Beautiful colour combinations and i am using it for my business. My friends and family have also been borrowing it for creating artwork and product development. It is tiny and i wish that it were translated fully into english, but I would happily buy again.

Just the most restful and beautiful book on colour ever seen, I can't recommend highly enough for those studying colour and design. I love it. I don't want to cut it up but there's a back section to cut and make your own combinations of swatches too :)

Would happily give this book five stars if the text had been translated into English. However, the colour combinations are often intriguing and usually inspiring. All in all a worthy purchase.
