The Mechanic: The Secret World of the F1 Pitlane : Priestley, Marc Elvis Reviews

Marc Priestley offers an amazing and unique insight into the McLaren F1 team with various tales and stories about the drivers, his fellow colleagues and the various antics that he got up to through the various eras as a mechanic, while moving through his different roles in the team. Well worth a read and it was fascinating to have McLaren painted in a completely different perspective to what I'd previously thought/known.

Expected interesting technical information and a bit of gos.Got on every page egocentric stories how ‘we’ most people in team, got drunk and wrecked a room/hire car. Mostly night before a race day.Disappointing read after Adrian Newey book and Ross Brawn book difference in intellect, knowledge and passion is very obvious.

I was disappointed that Marc's book which is very well written by the way, did not cover the pit lane as I expected. Certainly we learn what life was like 'outside' of the garage in the mechanics rare time off. And the many Kimi fans will I'm sure enjoy the rare insights into his world. What was missing for me were the 'secrets of the pit lane' itself. There is little material covering the broader activity of the garage and pit lane during Grand Prix weekends, and mentions of Ron Dennis and Martin Whitmarsh in their race capacities are almost non existent. There is however plenty from Marc's experience as a pit stop crew member and the stresses and strains and maybe that will be enough for most readers. Maybe I was expecting too much from the books sub title, others will I'm sure be well satisfied.

I bought this book after Marc gave a talk at one of my company's corporate events, which we all found very interesting and entertaining. I read it in just a few days as it's not a long book and it's so easy to read. Marc gives a great insight into the world of McLaren and Formula One during some of the most pivotal years in the sport. He covers everything from feuding drivers and winning World Championships to Spygate and the behind the scenes debauchery that (thankfully for the teams) remained largely hidden at the time. It certainly gave me a greater appreciation for everyone and everything involved in Formula One, and has inspired me to read even about the sport. A well written, well rounded and eye opening book.

I got this book after seeing the reviews. I have to say I am very disappointed. The book is of tales of getting drunk and destroying rental cars (with little or no reprimand). Weird how after an all night bender that such details of these are remembered. The stories also contradict themselves a lot. Ron Dennis is such an amazing, detail lead person. Only for such details later that weren't looked at and apparently he didn't know most of his pit crew.Poor book which promised .
