Late-Talking Children: A Symptom or a Stage? (The MIT Press) Reviews

I wish I could give this book a million stars, and that is not an exaggeration. This book has become my Bible, my lifeline and my source of strength as we navigate the awful waters of having a late talking son that is not autistic but could easily have been misdiagnosed with the slippery slope of the autism screenings/confirmations and for making us aware of the harmful effects of the Early Intervention ABA and PECS on non ASD late talkers. I thank God that I found this book and it gave me the strength to fight for my son and against misdiagnosed labels that could affect his life. If you ever read these comments, Dr. Camarata, please know that your book saved our sanity and we thank God that we found it.

If you have a late talking child and you are worried about their lack of verbal speech but you know they are not autistic, but you are worried about the potential for misdiagnosis under the autism testing, which are usually confirmatory rather than differential before you allow your child to be tested, READ THIS BOOK! Please do this for yourself and your child, be armed with the warnings and with the knowledge to be a fierce protector and advocate for your child. Do NOT just blindly trust strangers to label your child when you KNOW they are not right. Do not allow yourself to be shamed or bullied into therapies that are not right for your child. YOU know your child better than anyone and this book will become your sword and strength as you battle for your child. And anyone reading this and thinking I am going overboard with the hyperbole has never been in the trenches of what I am describing. I have read, underlined hi lighted, and quoted this book times than I can accurately estimate.
Thank you, Dr. Camarata and God bless you.

Best book ever and made me work on my sons speech even , I will never let a dr tell me that they think is wrong with my child when he’s really happy and eating really healthy and just literally delayed in speech that’s all, he is 2 1/2 now and he’s saying and words on his own time and is as parents having patience and teaching them a little everyday don’t give up : ) please parents don’t ever Let anyone tell you different about your child because they’re having trouble hitting the milestones, and let a Dr label your child because they think they’re different by some testing they’ve done, I really appreciate this book Thankyou

I have been waiting for this book to come out and wasn't disappointed. I now want to buy copies for everyone that comes in contact with my late talking son (because I'm not giving up my copy!) This includes: Doctors, therapists, school officials, nosey neighbors, busy body aunts and other experts on why my child is a late talker. This book can be used as a road map on where and how to get the appropriate treatment for your child. The key take away for me was that we as parents know our children best and it's imperative that we question the experts as they are often times not experts at all. While some are well meaning, many are working from old play books that not only don't help our speech delayed children, but can seriously hurt them.

To Stephen Camarata if you read your reviews THANK YOU! For all that you do. We are lucky to have found you. Please keep doing what you do.

If you have a late talking toddler son, like we do, you will receive a plethora of different diagnoses and feedback from a variety of sources. If none of the evaluations fit your description of your child, then the best thing you can do for yourself is to buy this book! Buy it, highlight it, and reread your highlighted material every night before bed instead of Googling. We were also fortunate enough to see Mary Camarata in person in Nashville for a personalized evaluation, which I would highly recommend. Mary's the only diagnosis that we received that made sense and we felt correctly depicted our child. We couldn't recommend this book as a first step enough. Thank you to Dr. Camarata and Mary Camarata for all that you do for kids and parents!

This book is such a great resource for helping families of late talking children navigate the various paths from diagnosis through treatment, education, and beyond school. Being a parent of a late talker, and a late talker himself, this book by Dr. Camarata gives a credibility and perspective that is much appreciated and underrepresented in the current literature on this topic. I have been to the Late Talker's Clinic in Nashville, and they were the only ones after a long line of clinicians to give us a proper diagnosis that fit for our son. Dr. Camarata and his wife are tireless advocates for late talking kids, and have bettered the lives of so many families and children through their guidance and support. This book finally brings the knowledge and support to a format accessible to all families in need. This book will help you to help your late talking kid, and take the reins back from the experts to ensure the best decisions and resources are being utilised. I especially recommend this book if you feel like your child's diagnosis does not fit, you're having battles with a teacher or your school, or you feel like no one get's it.

If you're looking to buy this book, odds are you're a parent of a late talker. You probably have been up many nights trying to find answers and though there is no magical cure, I believe this book will empower you on your journey. Dr. Camarata gives his firsthand account of both being a parent of a late talker and an expert in research and treatment of speech and language disorders. This book and Thomas Sowell's Einstein Syndrome have been a great benefit in untangling the mystery of our son's condition. Celebrating all the little victories.

Arrived on time and in good shape! This is a really good book for what it actually the topic is! It helped me a lot to understand things and I had to read it few years back, but I had no idea about it! It's such a matter that hurts parents, so I suggest you to read this if you experience such problems, or at least to be one of the books you will read related to the matter! I cannot say anything than that..

A very valuable book for all parents who believe that their child is not as autistic as some school officials and specialists claim. A lot of ideas on how to fight the system, push back and advocate for your child to be placed in a regular classroom and be allowed to follow his passions.
